Passed PLAB? How to earn money tutoring PLAB candidates online
Every month thousands of international doctors sit PLAB 1 and PLAB 2. Most of them prepare alone, from question banks and group chats. What they lack is someone who sat the same exam a year ago and can tell them, honestly, what it felt like and how they prepared.
If that someone is you, you can be paid for it. This guide explains how tutoring works on PassPeers, what tutors charge, and where the line is between helpful and not allowed.
What a PLAB tutoring session is
A session is one hour, online, one candidate. Typical topics:
- How you planned the last eight weeks before PLAB 1 and which resources were worth the time.
- Mock PLAB 2 stations: you play the patient or the examiner, then give feedback on structure, communication and time management.
- The things nobody writes down: the GMC registration steps after passing, what the test centre day is like, how to manage nerves.
What you never share: recalled questions, station content from your own sitting, or anything the GMC treats as confidential. PassPeers removes tutors who do.
What PLAB tutors charge
You set your own hourly rate. Most tutors on PassPeers ask between $40 and $90 an hour, in the currency of their choice. A doctor who passed PLAB 2 recently and offers mock stations sits at the upper end; a general "how I prepared" talk at the lower end. You can change the rate at any time.
How the money works
- A candidate sends you a request. That is free for them and non-binding for you.
- You accept by email and propose a time within the next seven days.
- The candidate pays by card through PassPeers and receives the video link.
- After the session the money goes to your bank account through Stripe. PassPeers keeps 15 % of the session price. There are no fees, no subscription and no minimum hours.
If the session does not take place, the candidate is refunded and nobody pays anything.
What you need
- Proof that you passed: your GMC reference number is shown on your profile so candidates can check it in the public register.
- A quiet room, a webcam and a stable connection. Any video tool works; most tutors use Google Meet or Zoom.
- One hour a week. There is no minimum.
Is the income taxable?
Yes, like any freelance income. The rules depend on the country you live in; a short talk with an accountant before your first payout is money well spent. PassPeers pays you the gross amount and does not withhold tax.
Getting started
Creating a profile takes about five minutes: name, exam passed, year, licence number, hourly rate, a few lines about how you prepared. Profiles go live after a manual check.
