Your first steps
- USCIS publishes a free guide for new immigrants, “Welcome to the United States”. Source
At work in hospitals and pharmacies
Federal law sets the minimum. Your state, your employer and your contract can give you more – read your contract, and ask HR when something is unclear.
- There is no federal law requiring paid sick leave. Check your state's rules and your contract. Source
- The Family and Medical Leave Act gives eligible employees up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave a year for certain family and medical reasons. Source
- Non-exempt employees must be paid overtime for hours over 40 in a work week. Source
- Tip In your first week, ask how handovers work on your unit or in your pharmacy, and how colleagues and patients expect to be addressed.
What to watch out for
- USCIS never asks you to pay fees to a person by phone or email, and doesn't accept Western Union, MoneyGram, PayPal, Venmo or gift cards. A “notario público” may not give you legal services on immigration – only a lawyer or an accredited representative can. Source
- Callers who say they are from a government agency and threaten you unless you pay are scammers. Hang up and call the agency on a number you look up yourself. Source
- If you enter or leave the US with more than US$10,000 in cash or other monetary instruments, you must report it on FinCEN Form 105. Source
