Examples from three states
- California: everyone who gets a California licence passes the knowledge test and the behind-the-wheel drive test. California issues licences to all residents regardless of immigration status. Source
- New York: with a licence from another country you pass the written test, take a five-hour pre-licensing course and pass the road test. You hand in your foreign licence at the road test. A licence not in English needs an international driving permit or a certified translation. Source
- Texas has reciprocity agreements with a few countries. The Department of Public Safety lists them and explains what changes for you. Source
International driving permit
- You can't get an international driving permit in the US for a licence from another country. Source
- Tip If you want one, ask about it in the country that issued your licence before you leave.
